Roman Abramovich keeps faith with Fernando Torres as Chelsea’s top striker
Fernando Torres has received a ringing endorsement from Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay, who said there was “no doubt” the £45million striker was a “world-class centre-forward and will score goals”.
Gourlay’s backing clearly echoes a message that has been delivered by the club’s owner, Roman Abramovich, who personally arranged the deal to sign Fernando Torres from Liverpool last year.
The chief executive also dismissed suggestions that Chelsea needed to find a high-calibre replacement for Didier Drogba and that the club also erred in not trying to sign Sergio Agüero last summer — having earlier expressed interest in the Argentine – before he joined Manchester City.
“We’ve got Fernando Torres and Fernando Torres is the man that we will go forward with and Fernando Torres will score us goals,”It is understood that the only chance of Torres leaving this summer will be if he asks for a transfer, which he is thought to have considered doing earlier in the campaign but is unlikely to carry through.
