The article is worth a read., Here’s the first bit…
First of all, can we drop this schmaltz about “the good name of Liverpool Football Club”? The T-shirts and the cultural differences spuriously advanced on Luis Suarez’s behalf before he was found guilty of racial abuse did for that. And, in any case, Liverpool as a club can’t be blamed for yesterday. They didn’t tell him to bite Branislav Ivanovic.
And it’s not even in their gift to hand back the point secured when their cheat prospered.
Before discussing what should be done, a close look at the offence would be in order. In a matter of seconds, Suarez pushed into Ivanovic and bit him; then, when brushed off by the startled defender, flourished an imaginary card in the manner once used by Slaven Bilic to get Laurent Blanc infamously sent off; then suddenly broke into a limp before exchanging a quiet word with the referee. The expression “made a meal of it” will never seem the same again.
So thanks to television, without which it might have been covered up. As the fan reluctantly interviewed by Sky on his way out of Anfield sneered: “Show me the teeth marks.”
As poor Steven Gerrard, unbelievably unprepared as he faced the cameras, declared: “You’ll get nothing out of me.” The family would have closed ranks again if only Suarez’s word could have been set against the victim’s.
