England manager Fabio Capello should have fallen into line with FA chief David Bernstein over John Terry
The key question surrounding Fabio Capello’s decision to go public with his feelings on Sunday evening about John Terry being relieved of the England captaincy is about his motive.
Even before the England manager catapulted the latest chapter of the saga on to the front pages with his comments on Italian television, the Football Association was already aware of his opposition to the decision to demote the Chelsea defender.
My understanding is that Capello made his feelings clear to the FA hierarchy during phone calls with senior figures last week, so his remarks on Sunday would not have totally surprised FA chairman David Bernstein or members of the FA board who had ultimately agreed unanimously to separate Terry from the captain’s armband last week.
But they hadn’t expected them so soon and in public.
