Torres’ latest low: £50m flop subbed at HALF-TIME after making it 20 matches without a goal
Fernando Torres cut a forlorn figure after he was replaced by Didier Drogba at half-time on Saturday, confirming his place among Chelsea’s most expensive mistakes.
The £50million striker, a leading candidate for the unofficial title of Chelsea’s worst ever signing, has now gone 1,298 minutes without a goal for the club.
His barren run dates back to last October and he managed just 15 touches at the Bridge Not one of those was a shot, either, and Drogba’s return from the Africa Cup of Nations could limit his starting chances until the end of the season.
Torres’s woeful form means he has produced a worse return than Andriy Shevchenko and is not much better than Chris Sutton, despite costing five times as much. Even Mateja Kezman, who was only kept for one season, scored more often than the Spaniard.
Drogba held an impromptu half-time team talk in the tunnel and he helped inspire an equaliser for Daniel Sturridge as they were held 1-1 to take the match to a replay at St Andrew’s.
Torres, the British record signing, has now gone 20 matches without scoring for the Blues.
Villas-Boas refused to criticise the striker after the match, saying: ‘I’m not concerned. When he scores the goals, he’ll be a different player for sure.’
This latest low point for Torres has sparked suggestions that boss Andre Villas-Boas has finally run out of patience with the misfiring striker.
Torres has scored just four times this season, with his latest goals coming against Genk in the Champions League on October 19.
Villas-Boas came in for stick from the Chelsea fans, who chanted the name of former manager Jose Mourinho to vent their frustration during another dire display.
Villas-Boas was unhappy with his side’s performance as he attempts to convince owner Roman Abramovich that he is the man to lead Chelsea out of their current struggles.
He added: ‘It was not good enough for sure. But we take the game to St Andrews, a difficult game and another story. They are undefeated in the league there and I’m sure they will put on an even more decent challenge.
‘First half we didn’t have a lot of opportunities, better in the second half but not enough.
